Virginia Ryan is an

Australian-born artist

based in Africa and Italy.

since 2000 :

The Castaways Project

Exposures

Topographies of the Dark

and work-in-progress

inspired by Mermaid Myths

along West African Coastlines.

Trained at the National School Of The Arts, Canberra, Australia (79)

and the Settlement Art Therapy Program, Edinburgh, Scotland (94)

Ryan has exhibited internationally since 1979.

Since 1983 she has worked with artists

in Egypt, Brazil, Ex-Yugoslavia,

Great Britain, Italy, Ghana and Ivory Coast .

Ryan co-foundered the

Foundation for Contemporary Art in Ghana

and was co-director from 2004-2008.

From 2006-2008 she lectured at N.Y.U. campus in Accra,

whilst co-curating exhibitions in West Africa and Italy.

Her studio is found in central Italy,

where recent work includes

the ongoing Italian collaborations begun in 2007,

Mapping The Hand, Eye, Voice.

In recent years Ryan worked at

The Annex Studio

on the Old Santa Fe Trail in New Mexico,

in collaboration with sound artist,

film-maker and anthropologist Steven Feld.

Presently she works in Italy and Ivory Coast

on solo and collective art projects:
